Meetup : SF Meetup: Mini Talks

We’ll be meeting to give and listen to very short talks!
We’ll do 7-minute lightning talks with 3 additional minutes allowed for questions. We’ll also limit the number of programming-related talks to no more than half of all talks, in order to promote variety.
A talk doesn’t have to be formal, planned, or even something that you’d expect someone to Give A Talk About; it can be as simple as telling the group about something you find interesting or cool. In the past, we’ve had people talk about topics like: how complicated the process of organizing fresh food for airplane flights is, their experience volunteering for a local political campaign, a video game they were designing and writing, and many others.
We don't expect any sort of preparation or practice for these kinds of talks. They're very casual and the expectations are low. If your talk isn't great, it's okay because we'll just move on to another one in a few minutes. If it helps, think of it this way: you're just being given the conversational floor for a few minutes, in a slightly more organized way than usual.
For help getting into the building, please call (or text, with a likely-somewhat-slower response rate): three zero one, three five six, five four two four.
Format:
We meet and start hanging out at 6:15, but don’t officially start doing the meetup topic until 6:45-7 to accommodate stragglers. Usually there is a food order that goes out before we start the meetup topic.
About these meetups:
The mission of the SF LessWrong meetup is to provide a fun, low-key social space with some structured interaction, where new and non-new community members can mingle and have interesting conversations. Everyone is welcome.
We explicitly encourage people to split off from the main conversation or diverge from the topic if that would be more fun for them (moving side conversations into a separate part of the space if appropriate). Meetup topics are here as a tool to facilitate fun interaction, and we certainly don’t want them to inhibit it.

We’ll be meeting to work on projects!
Near the beginning, we’ll go around and talk about what we’ll be working on, then do a couple of pomodoros quietly. At some point we’ll break into general conversations and socializing.

UPDATE: This meetup's location has been changed. This meetup will now be held outside, at the courtyard behind the Market on Market. Here's a map to the approximate location: https://map.what3words.com/slick.delay.toward The courtyard is accessible to pedestrians from the east side of 10th St., or by walking through The Market from Market St. You can call the same phone number if you're having any problems locating us.
We’ll be meeting to solve each other’s problems!
Here's how it works: we’ll have everyone brainstorm silently for a few minutes, then go around and summarize what problems we might like to work on; then people can break up into smaller conversations according to problems they think they could be most helpful with. This format is now what I'd call "tried and true".

Please note: this meetup is on July 11th, not July 4th. There will be no meetup on July 4th.
We'll be meeting to cook and eat food together!
Here's how this works: I'll send out a planning doc via the bayarealesswrong mailing list, to recruit 3-5 people to bring a recipe and be "leaders" for their particular dish. Everyone else who shows up will help the leaders as needed with the cooking. I'll ask the leaders to populate a grocery list beforehand so that I can do the grocery shopping, and everyone who shows up and helps eat will split the bill.
If you have dietary restrictions and want to come, feel free to mention that on the mailing list thread to encourage others to choose a dish that will work for you - or lead a dish yourself.
Instead of the usual "wait for stragglers" thing, we'll start the meetup as soon as people show up, since cooking can be time consuming.

I have Dominion, Puzzle Strike, Ticket to Ride, Suburbia, Set, and standard playing cards. Please feel free to bring other games you’d like to play.
This week I'd also like to try playing some interactive non-board games; for example, the Schelling Point Game (where everyone tries to think of the same object in a category), the Description Game (where we take turns trying to notice new things about an object), and possibly even the Clicker Game (where we try to use reinforcement learning techniques on each other). Feel free to bring your own of these as well.
