We’ll be meeting to give and listen to very short talks!

We’ll do 7-minute lightning talks with 3 additional minutes allowed for questions. We’ll also limit the number of programming-related talks to no more than half of all talks, in order to promote variety.

A talk doesn’t have to be formal, planned, or even something that you’d expect someone to Give A Talk About; it can be as simple as telling the group about something you find interesting or cool. In the past, we’ve had people talk about topics like: how complicated the process of organizing fresh food for airplane flights is, their experience volunteering for a local political campaign, a video game they were designing and writing, and many others.

We don't expect any sort of preparation or practice for these kinds of talks. They're very casual and the expectations are low. If your talk isn't great, it's okay because we'll just move on to another one in a few minutes. If it helps, think of it this way: you're just being given the conversational floor for a few minutes, in a slightly more organized way than usual.

We'll be meeting to cook and eat food together!

Here's how this works: I'll send out a planning doc via the bayarealesswrong mailing list, to recruit 3-5 people to bring a recipe and be "leaders" for their particular dish. Everyone else who shows up will help the leaders as needed with the cooking. I'll ask the leaders to populate a grocery list beforehand so that I can do the grocery shopping, and everyone who shows up and helps eat will split the bill.

If you have dietary restrictions and want to come, feel free to mention that on the mailing list thread to encourage others to choose a dish that will work for you - or lead a dish yourself.

Instead of the usual "wait for stragglers" thing, we'll start the meetup as soon as people show up, since cooking can be time consuming.

This week I'd also like to try playing some interactive non-board games; for example, the Schelling Point Game (where everyone tries to think of the same object in a category), the Description Game (where we take turns trying to notice new things about an object), and possibly even the Clicker Game (where we try to use reinforcement learning techniques on each other). Feel free to bring your own of these as well.
