Whether reaching one is possible or not, utopian settings can be a useful thought experiment for examining our values. What's necessary to make a good one? What seemingly-good traits would go horribly wrong?

I'm starting a meetup group in Rochester so some of us can hang out in meatspace. Hopefully, this will be a recurring meetup, every 2 - 4 weeks or so. To be notified of future meetups, join the meetup.com group: http://www.meetup.com/Rochester-Transhumanists/
For the first meetup, we'll play some board games (I have Xendo, and feel free to bring other games, too), eat pizza, get to know each other, and talk about what we want out of this group. The start and end times aren't firm, come and go when you like.
Jitters Cafe is 5 minutes from RIT by car, or a bit under half an hour on foot. If you need a ride, contact Kim at mareofnight@gmail.com. I'm coming from center city, so both RIT and UofR are on the way. If you're somewhere else, I'll see if I can coordinate a carpool for you.

If it's worth saying, but not worth its own post (even in Discussion), then it goes here.

We will have a meetup this Sunday, 6 October, at 1pm at Nam Phuong restaurant, 11th and Washington.
Nam Phuong is on 11th street, a mile south of Market East. It is on the west side of the street, between Washington and Ellsworth.
The discussion prompt is the article (What Bayesianism taught me)[http://lesswrong.com/lw/iat/what_bayesianism_taught_me/].

Location: Givovani's Pizza
Discussion topic: The Sword of Good (A short story - I highly recommend reading it before the meetup if you are able, because it's meant to have some element of surprise.)
Fiction doesn't seem to be used as a discussion topic for meetups very often, but I noticed that we tend to end up talking about stories together anyway, and it usually leads to interesting conversations.
If you have any simple games you'd like to play as a group, please bring them - it will give us something to do in the beginning while people are still arriving.

We will be meeting at Giovani Pizza at 4 PM on Sunday to discuss the article Humans Are Not Automatically Strategic. If you don't have time to read the article, come out anyway. We welcome your thoughts on the subject regardless. See you there!

Meetup : Philadelphia informal meetup
Discussion article for the meetup : Philadelphia informal meetup
There has been some interest in reviving the Philadelphia LessWrong meetup group. We're going to start with an informal meetup at the coffee shop La Colombe, tentatively from 3:00 to 4:30 (but will likely extend past the planned time).
Our plan for the meeting: 1) Get to know each other 2) Talk about our goals for the group, and what we can contribute 3) Brainstorm ideas for future activities and discussions
The discussion topic is "optimizing working in groups". We might or might not get to it, depending on how long the rest takes and what people feel like talking about.
We have been using a mailing list to communicate. Feel free to join. If you'd like to come to future meetups, please mark which times are convenient for you on the calendar.
