Coercion is far

-6 saliency 16 May 2011 12:37AM

I was in the subway about a month ago when saw an advert for a new show The Bourgeoisie.  While waiting for my train I thought about the families patriarch and the control he probably exerted over family members.  I imagined the cliché of the daughter forced into a marriage for political advantage.  I thought about the sacrifice for the greater good of the family that she would be coerced into making and thought how it is easier to force others to sacrifice then to sacrifice yourself.  I thought that coercion may be one of the mechanisms that have enabled humans to engage and execute long term plans.  If the immediate short-term costs are what most often repress long-term action then those not saddled with the short-term costs of their long-term actions will be prone to engage in more long-term action.  Coercion is far.

A prediction market in which you bet karma.

Great one. I was thinking the same thing :)

It should be noted though that this is a significant programing project though and probably out of the scope of a re-design. It is a project in itself.

Still nice idea.

Have a second karma bubble, that only sums the upvotes and downvotes you've given that person.

Interesting idea, I'll up-vote it though it is not a top wish of mine.

If implemented I would like to see it implemented as a rollover on the karma bubble. Though interesting I don't think it justifies taking up real-estate.

Thanks, did we ever raise the number to 50?

This suggests that it's still 20.

Moderation Wiki Article

I have transformed

http://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Site_features

into

http://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Moderation

I think "site features" is to general of a topic for the content contained in the article.

In the new wiki article I focus on the topic of all the ways content can be moderated and give the information I have gathered about the process.  I took the liberty to simply state that Eliezer_Yudkowsky is the one who promotes articles to the PROMOTED section.  Besides that most is taken from other areas of the site.

I'm sure there are factual and formating errors please correct/contribute as needed.

My understanding is that it was risen from 20.  Is this correct?  What is the current number?

In my opinion, having meet-ups announced at the front page (which is 'promoted') is very important because if strangers accidentally first and for a short period of time visit the site and see a meetup in their region, they might decide to go there. Getting new people into rationality and having many people at meetups is, IMO, more important than the small nuisance of having to scroll past the meetups.

I think the probability of the above is slim and better served by a bright meetup button or some such solution.

I think whatever the probability that a first time stranger sees a meetup close to them geographically and goes is eclipsed by the probability that the user will not be presented with an article of interest and that they will never become interested in the site.

With only 2/10 articles promoted being articles a person is far less likely to see something accessible/of interest to them.

This said everything in moderation. If the ratio was reversed so that 2/10 were promotions for meetups this would not be an issue. If though you wish to post this many meetups to a prominent place on the website we need some sort of change to the structure of the website.

That link says,

Articles are selected for promotion on the basis of substantive new content, clear argument, good writing, popularity, and importance. Promoted articles appear on the Less Wrong home page. Non-promoted articles are still available in the other views, such as New or Popular.

But it doesn't say who does the selection. I thought it was only Eliezer. Can anyone else promote an article? Can anyone un-promote an article? Is there a vote? A sum of up-down votes from editors? What?

I second this question. I would like to know the list of people who promote. I also would love to see who promotes what. Is this already possible?
