Thanks, that hadn't occurred to me. It says "No email address for that user". I can't set an email address either.

I can't seem to change my password. It's 41 characters long (I don't know why I thought that was a good idea), which might have something to do with it. I've tried multiple times, and every time it says "Incorrect password" next to the "Current password" field. Any tips?

This is unlikely (p<0.05) to help in this case, but sometimes client-side validation is stricter than server-side. I recently had to disable the max-length on a text entry box so that I could enter the reference number I'd been given (but I checked and there isn't a max-length on the old password box here); another time I had to disable javascript so that I could use an email address with a + that had been accepted before.

What happens when you tell it that you forgot your password. Many system respond by sending you an email with allows you to set a new password.

Beeminder: +4 I’ve used it for several months, and it helps. Part of that is that in order to use Beeminder, you need to be able to measure what you do. In the beginning, I had too many goals which led to emergencies almost every evening, which was annoying. I don’t know if it’s a bad thing that Beeminder provides external pressure – it might make previously pleasant tasks unpleasant in the long run, because they start to feel like something you have to do instead of something you want to do. However, so far, I haven’t gotten the impression that this is mu... (read more)

Have some warm fuzzies for the "Avoiding ego depletion with food" section. I appreciated the anecdote and link.

I won’t be there this time, unfortunately.

I’d like to try talking about productivity.

0Valeriy
Great! I would be very interested, and so I believe :) lot of other people. Do you have something concrete on your mind?
cadac100

I have seen some convincing arguments that this sort of deliberate bonding is dangerous.

I’d be interested in hearing them.

I admit I’m a bit confused by the date format – I don’t know what the +0200 means, and I could’ve sworn I set it to 3pm or maybe 2pm (and I’m pretty sure when I looked at this post earlier today it said 03:00:00PM). Anyway, I’ll be there at 3pm local time. Gasteig.

0David Althaus
Yeah, yesterday it was definitely still 3PM. Maybe you should write that update in the original post, just in case, not everyone is reading all comments.

Thanks for commenting and welcome! Do you own a copy of Zendo? I don’t, so we’d have to improvise with Legos or something.

0Valeriy
No, unfortunately I don't have a copy Zendo. We could use lego or make peaces ourselves and use coins for stones.

GTD and the Pomodoro technique have different aims, I think, and are not mutually exclusive – you could use GTD for keeping track of what to do when, and Pomodoros for actually doing (some) tasks.

Many people also write down the task they want to do next, and put a checkmark next to it after they successfully finished the task. This might be important because it helps to build a chain of successes: http://lifehacker.com/281626/jerry-seinfelds-productivity-secret

Yes, I do in fact use GTD for keeping track of my TODO list and calendar. The part of GTD that I had trouble with, though, was the paper organizing part. I could never manage to keep all my papers properly filed as they came in, nor could I manage to work my way down to a clean desk as Allen recommends. That's where Pomodoro really helped me. 25 minutes at a time, once a day, is enough to keep the stack under control.

I think it’d be cool to do this again in a few months. February or April, perhaps.

cadac10

Please don’t be! I, personally, am glad for an opportunity to speak English, and this is an English-speaking site after all.

I vote for doing the meetup on the 20th/21th instead. It looks like there’s only three of us who could make it this Saturday, compared to maybe 4-6 at some other time. (Edit: Also, I just learned I have another obligation on the 6th, so this Saturday doesn’t work well for me.) I could make a doodle, if that helps.

Oh, and also: The address of the café is not Bahnhofsplatz 2 – there are two Coffee Fellows, one inside the central station (which I think you are referring to), and one outside (at Bahnhofsplatz 2).

0David Althaus
Actually, this Saturday is also suboptimal for me, so let's postpone the whole thing. I made a Doodle-survey: http://www.doodle.com/gekwqtzyxzzam9xm Yeah, you're right about the address. My bad.

I will attend if there are at least two other people, and I’ll bring my slackline, just in case.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but I'm unsure how to calculate P(S). I'd appreciate it if someone could post an explanation.

3malthrin
Sure. S results from HH or from TT, so we'll calculate those independently and add them together at the end. We'll do that by this equation: P(p=x|S) = P(p=x|HH) P(H) + P(p=x|TT) P(T). We start out with a uniform prior: P(p=x) = 1. After observing one H, by Bayes' rule, P(p=x|H) = P(H|p=x) P(p=x) / P(H). P(H|p=x) is just x. Our prior is 1. P(H) is our prior, multiplied by x, integrated from 0 to 1. That's 1/2. So P(p=x|H) = x1/(1/2) = 2x. Apply the same process again for the second H. Bayes' rule: P(p=x|HH) = P(H|p=x,H) P(p=x|H) / P(H|H). The first term is still just x. The second term is our updated belief, 2x. The denominator is our updated belief, multiplied by x, integrated from 0 to 1. That's 2/3 this time. So P(p=x|HH) = x2x/(2/3) = 3x^2. Calculating tails is similar, except we update with 1-x instead of x. So our belief goes from 1, to 2-2x, to 3x^2-6x+3. Then substitute both of these into the original equation: (3/2)(x^2) + (3/2)(x^2 - 2x + 1). From there it's just a bit of algebra to get it into the form I linked to.

Wouldn't this create a lot of annoying clutter in threads? Maybe create a dedicated discussion post where people correct the posts of people who invoked Crocker's Rules of wordcraft. This would probably require that whoever corrects a mistake also sends a PM to the non-native speaker in question.

(I'm happy if anyone corrects my posts.)

1betterthanwell
Receiving a couple of suggestions for minor corrections made me realise the same thing. Discussions will bulk up with suggestions that are useful to the recipient. Enough of these could add more perceived noise to the comments than they will improve the signal of the target post. Private messaging the poster avoids this. But is less rewarding than to point out other peoples mistakes in public.

Thanks, everybody! I don't think anyone is going to make any further edits at this point. As soon as I can I will look through the changes just to make sure that there have not been any accidents and then send it to lukeprog.

Hi everybody! More than half a year ago, I came across LessWrong via Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, and have since read around half of the sequences. I'm so glad I found this site. I had a sense that more is possible, but I didn't even know the word "philantrophy" existed before I got here, although that might be because that word is less common in German (which is my first language). At the few meetups I've been to, I've met some very awesome folks – I can't remeber feeling so comparatively uninteresting ever before. I hope my experience with this site continues to be this eye-opening.

5Prismattic
It's "philanthropy", but "philantrophy" would be an awesome neologism for the chaos that results from well-intentioned but ill-conceived humanitarian aid.

Welcome to LW, cadac!

Okay! I'll contact you when I've finished the first draft.

1lukeprog
Excellent. Glad you two are doing this!

I am willing to translate the FAQ to German, but I'm not sure I can do it on my own, especially concerning the technical terms. Someone competent would have to independently translate the document or at least proofread my translation. Who wants to help?

7Tripitaka
I am willing to at least proofread or even collaborate sometimes on hard passages. Multiple indepent translations do not seem timeeffective at all. Edit:@lukeprog, the only other language the singularity-FAQ is available in links to a downloadable word-document- why not have a regular HTML-site?
