Interesting to contrast with Leave a Line of Retreat:

leave yourself a line of retreat, so that you will have less trouble retreating

There, you leave a line of retreat for yourself; here, for your conversation partner.

if someone is stressed or sleep-deprived because of work, then surely taking vacations will have positive effects.

If someone’s mental health problems are caused only by insufficient free time/energy/sleep, then yes. I’d wager the majority of depression cases are caused by work-independent internal factors, and either would resolve on their own (even while working) or would not resolve even when taking three months off.

After my fair share of drinks during university, I rarely drink in the last 7 years – approx. since I joined the Rationalist communities –, even when others in my group are drinking hard.

Bit of a counterpoint to the post. Usually, I can trust a person more once we've gone drinking together; but interestingly, I can Rationalists relatively quickly without any drinks. (As a person, not necessarily as a friend.) Maybe this is because of the much stronger internal consistency of the community members, and that their statements can very often be taken at face v... Great post, I especially liked the "triggers to pick up the habit again" section.

The linked website for military assistance (war.ukraine.ua) is dubious. Donations in fiat currencies are better done at the addresses listed on the official website: https://bank.gov.ua/en/about/support-the-armed-forces

Meditation is quite different as in it's more of a state of mind as opposed to an altered mentality. With psychedelics there is a clear distinction between when you are tripping and when you aren't tripping.

However, according to some, even meditation done properly can have negative effects, which would be similar to psychedelics but manifesting slower and through your own effort. Quoted from the book review:

Once you have meditated enough to reach the A&P Event, you’re stuck in the (very unpleasant) Dark Night Of The Soul until you can meditate you

I don't think I was advocating for either. I apologize if I came off as saying people should try psychedelics and meditation.

Thanks to everyone who came!

Scott's meetup organizer @mingyuan asked participants to fill out this survey: https://forms.gle/Nqx7ShVcfS4tyfQP7

Thanks to @mingyuan for the assistance and the financial support. Self-ordered take-out food was reimbursed up to 10 EUR / person.

Looking for help to bring edible stuff to Stadtpark.

Requirements: ability to carry ~15 kg for 900 meters (backpack provided), optionally stopping at every corner.

EDIT: thanks to Axel and Attila, now the problem is solved! We won't die of thirst.

Hi Laszlo, I am happy to give a helping hand. Give me a call. + 32 486 32 98 98 (also Signal / Whatsapp).   Axel

Hello everyone! I'm the new organizer.

As Scott said, please feel free to come even if you feel awkward about it, even if you’re not “the typical ACX reader”, if you haven't read a post in a while, even if you’re worried people won’t like you, etc, etc, etc.

COVID requirements: You are required to be verifiably vaccinated or recovered or PCR-tested after 30 September 5pm. I will check this and then you can lose LW karma. Officials could check this, and then I will lose real-life karma. (Antigen tests are not sufficient as per the new regulations.)

There is a Telegram group called “Less Wrong”, which mostly consists of participants of the European Less Wrong Community Weekend. There are on average 1-2 topics, 30 messages a day.

I suspect this group can’t be shared via link, so PM me with your Telegram ID and I can add you to it.

most members are passive.

I suspect most members are even inactive there.

I assume only 30-50 read or write comments, suggesting that the group is far from Dunbar's number.

I recall Rhonda Patrick suggesting the TheraZinc oral spray (citation needed), which contains zinc gluconate. Unfortunately, it's a US-only product. (https://quantumhealth.com/shop/product/therazinc-oral-spray)

Interesting! I don't see an obvious reason that wouldn't work based on my current knowledge, and the website sounds like they either know what they're doing or are surprisingly good fakers. But neither of those is very compelling. And I know little-to-nothing about most of the things on the ingredients list. One thing I noticed on the list was "polysorbate", violating But according to wiktionary, -ate usually refers to a derivative of an -ic acid, and it looks like there's no such thing as polysorbic acid. So maybe polysorbate is okay. (And being in a spray might change things anyway. E.g. if it reaches the relevant tissues sooner maybe it makes less difference if there are other things for the zinc to bind to?) A serving (8 sprays) has about half as much zinc gluconate as a lozenge has acetate, so it should be a quarter as effective; except again for the spray thing, which presumably makes up for it some amount. It does seem to be available in the UK as well. I'm tempted to buy some for my partner, who finds the lozenges much more unpleasant than I do. (Oh, but on the negative, they make their zinc lozenge sound about as compelling: "This simple and tasty formula provides 7 mg of zinc in a targeted, bioavailable form. Zinc gluconate is the chelated form that has been used in multiple immune health studies. Our lozenge delivery releases the zinc ions in your throat and mouth for effective immune support." But if the podcast is accurate, it shouldn't work (except generically as a zinc supplement), because you can't eliminate the metallic taste without ruining the effectiveness. And again I don't know much about the ingredients, but I wouldn't be surprised if "natural blood orange" contains vitamin C aka citric acid.)

Talk topic has been settled: Kevin Simler & Robin Hanson's book, The Elephant in the Brain: Hidden Motives in Everyday Life http://elephantinthebrain.com

True, they will fail to cooperate for some R, but the values of such R have a low probability. (But yeah, it's also required that uy and R are chosen independently—otherwise an adversary could just choose either so that it results in the players choosing different actions.)

The smoothness comes in from marginalising a random R. The coordination comes from making R and ε common knowledge, so they cooperate using the correlation in their observations—an interesting phenomenon.

The game is indeed a clean example of Glomarization.

I might have misunderstood your main point, which I interpret as: “because of the counterfactual that I could have gotten a high card in this game, I shouldn't reveal a low card with probability 1.” Are you sure that it's because of the counterfactual in the current game, and not the possible consequences in my later interactions with B?

I would reveal my card if the game was truly unique, in that zero information leaks out. (Suppose B's memories of this game are erased afterwards.)

In real life, my decisio... (read more)
