Has anyone tried doing a mind map? They're simple procedures that (specifically graphic) designers use to upstart creative thinking. You start with any word in the center relating to the problem you want solved (and all design is, is problem solving, mind) and then write out every term that you think of without self doubt.
Though this link is referring more to the visual design applications of the method, it's still really useful and is how my professor taught me.
