My first recommendation here is always Iain M Banks, Player of Games.

Personally, I'd recommend starting with Consider Phlebas, then Use of Weapons, then Player of Games.

Why that Culture novel, precisely? I don't recall it as one of the better ones. Admittedly, I'm unusual in that my favourite Culture story is The State of the Art. General Pinochet Chili Con Carne! Richard Nixon Burgers! What's not to like?
