I look at the comments through the recent comments bar, but that requires having the LW tab open more or less constantly.

I click on "Recent Comments" and read as far back as I have to until I've caught up. Reading backwards can be mentally tiring ... so I'm actually just skimming for interesting comments. When I find one that seems interesting, I read through that thread for the continuity of the discussion.
