The standard Internet convention roughly matches U.S. fair-use laws.

Honestly, though, ask permission to repost for each individual post. It's not hard, and it works.

For sure permission is required to repost someone else's work, I'm mostly asking about reposting your own work. We're all well within our rights to do that, I'm wondering what the best practice is, though. Should we encourage those with separate blogs to crosspost? Discourage? Expect cross-links? etc.

Personal opinion: a reason I find crossposts annoying is that I always feel I have to click through to the crosspost and see what the commenters are posting on the crosspost as well as the original post. That's a potential downside to think about when considering a crosspost. Obviously crossposts do have advantages too! I personally am not going to trash a crosspost just for being a crosspost.

I'll also echo RobinZ's suggestion of adding from/to notices whenever you do decide to crosspost something.

I like "Crossposted from" and "Crossposted to" notices, but I know of no convention.
