a far more dangerous idiom that can lock an equilibrium in place even if it's harmful to everyone involved.

Could I get a reference for this? I wanted to refer someone else to it, and my Google searches failed me.

Thanks! They credit the initial discovery to D Hirshleifer, E Rasmusen: Cooperation in a repeated prisoners’ dilemma with ostracism, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, 1989 and happily the PDF is freely available
