If we don't believe you represent a significantly credible threat, with the ability to achieve a breakaway dominance then we can value you for the companionship or social value that you provide as we go about our various goals. This is much the same thing as what we do with each other. Most people I interact with I certainly wouldn't trust with ultimate power to get whatever they want despite my will.
