Even for someone who hasn't read the sequences, that sounds like a pretty huge "unless." If the two don't have exactly the same interests, why wouldn't their interests interfere?

Machines might not be interested in the messy human habitat, but would instead decide to go their own way (space, simulations, nicer subbranches of MWI, baby universes, etc.)
