I agree that trying to turn people around you into rationalists is probably a bad idea. First, it is dangerous to be half a rationalist, so if you get started doing this you're committing to either finishing it or potentially harming the person you're trying to turn. Second, most people are not doing interesting enough things for rationality to be all that useful to them; cached thoughts are more than enough for living a cached life. Probably the only people worth trying to turn are people with something to protect.

If your goal is to spend more time around rationalists, you could just... spend more time around rationalists. Moving to Berkeley is not a bad idea.

I'm going to disagree with that sentiment. In general, the people around me have goals that are compatible with mine; so helping them to be more effective at accomplishing their goals helps me as well. (If nothing else, it makes them less likely to sabotage me by accident). Secondly, if a person recognises that I have been helpful, then they are more likely to be helpful in return; purposely sabotaging someone's rationality could lead to emnity if they find out, which would be bad.
