I see suffering the whole day in healthcare but I'm actually pretty much numbed to it. Nothing really gets to me, and if it did it could be quite crippling. Sometimes I watch sad videos or read dramatizations of real events to force myself to care for a while, to keep me from forgetting why I show up at work. Reading certain types of writings by rationalists helps too.

You shouldn't get more than glimpses of the weight of the world, or rather you shouldn't let them through the defences, to be able to function.
