Finally, although we had expected conformity to be lower when the participant's response was not made available to the majority, this variable did not have a significant effect.

That is a really interesting variation.

It's not that they're consciously trying to conform, it's that their truth function is highly dependent on the opinions of others. A heeby jeeby inducing idea that I've suspected for a while, but can't recall such clear data for before.

For some people, two plus two really does equal five if other people think so.
