As far as I can tell, it's more of a spandrel than anything. As a general rule, anything you can do with "hypnosis", you can do without. Depending on what you're doing with it, it can be more of a feature or more of a bug that comes inherent to the architecture.
I could probably give a better answer if you explained exactly what you mean by "hypnosis", since no one can agree on a definition.
Dennett makes a good case for the word "spandrel" not really meaning much in "Darwin's Dangerous Idea".
