Containment thread

1. Negotiating self defense

Stranger A: I'm going to beat you up

Stranger B: I have photographic memory and illustrate professionally.

Stranger A: I could kill, blind or main you.

Stranger B: I could escape then submit your likeness to the authorities

2. Experimental philosophy

Is anyone here an ethical intuitionist or not?

3. Happy home

Observational studies suggest distance to work is associated with happiness. I moved about 15km closer to work and now walk there, and guess what, I'm a lot happier! Potential confounders: moved out of family home, family home was hostile environment

4. Unhappy babies

Babies frequently cry and are generally helpless. What if they are suffering beyond our comprehension and our shallow memories are our respite from that early trauma?

5. Techno v.s. natural reincarnation

People compare the possibility of resurrection after cryopreservation to the possibility of resurrection without cryopreservation as a slim chance v.s. no chance. I'm skeptical that brain death would imply information theoretic death, when you considr the shear size of the universe, and possible arrangements of matter over time in order to arrange in the form that materialises you, in some stable way, again. Reincarnation, if you will. My reservation against cryonics is not the slim chance, it's that paying for that slight increase in chance is trivial.

  1. you might be motivating a simple, "punch him and steal his wallet " to "kill him and get away with it". Might not want to do that.
