What is the main evidence that deliberate reasoning is computationally expensive and where would I go to read about it (books, keywords etc.)? This seems to be a well accepted theory, but I am not familiar with the science.

There are all kinds of studies showing that when working memory is occupied then system 2 but not system 1 processes are interrupted, and so on. The Frankish intro should at least point you to the sources you may be looking for.
