Maybe this is the Fermi Great Filter. It is in the interest of every member of society to join one of these groups. Sure in every world that they individually experience, they each end up rich. But they also all end up in a world where their civilization has suddenly had its population drop to 1/16th of what it was. Per capita goods production may drop even more because all these suddenly rich people will then want to retire. So they end up poorer in real terms. Likely Civilization colapses and loses the ability to do radio astronomy and we don't see any radio signals from other civilizations. Fermi paradox explained (with lots of 'maybe's).
