I have been using an SRS for self study of a personal language, and as a future teacher was curious how I could incorporate this into a classroom setting. So, I was pleasantly surprised to come across a well written review of a teacher’s experience incorporating it.
One thing I use in my language study that might help you is example sentences with blanks. You used the example of the different forms of “there” as a challenging concept, but I conquer grammar like this using sentences like “There is a pan on the stove,” “Their book was left on the table,” and “They’re looking for a lost dog,” leaving the “there” words as blanks and “there or their or they’re” listed beneath. Then the reverse shows the correct word, the completed sentence, and maybe a brief grammar explanation on the back. A few examples like these break the chain of learning a rule without stopping to use it, while providing a small opportunity for an explanation of a rule. Bonus points if I remember why the correct term belongs in the sentence.
