Some beings exist only as relations rather than as individuals.
Some entities can switch between different existential states.
Some forms of being are temporary configurations of a larger ontological structure.

Mearsheimer's Double Standard: Realism for Russia, Idealism for Israel

I’ve examined Professor John Mearsheimer’s arguments, interviews, and works over the years and have found some of his theories and stances intellectually stimulating. His perspective often tends to challenge the status quo, and that's certainly worth a closer look. Recently, though, his takes on the Ukraine-Russia war and the Israel-Palestine conflict have caught my attention. There seems to be a notable incongruity between the lens through which he views the confrontation between Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah on one hand, and the Ukraine-Russia war on the other. This is the dimension of his analysis that I'd like to dissect here.

LessWrong readers concerned with existential risks should certainly care, as frameworks of this nature send dangerously mixed signals about acceptable behavior in high-stakes conflicts. Similar views have grown increasingly influential in global policy contexts. Leaving states uncertain about how their actions will be interpreted or responded to encourages brinkmanship and destabilizes diplomacy and deterrence strategies. Existing crisis management protocols are already fragile, and the last thing you want to do is to add more uncertainty and lack of consistency to the mix, especially when nuclear-armed states are concerned.

LLMs stifle creativity, eliminate opportunities for serendipitous discovery and disrupt intergenerational transfer of wisdom

In this post, I’ve made no attempt to give an exhaustive presentation of the countless unintended consequences of widespread LLM use; rather, I’ve concentrated on three potential effects that are at the borderline of research, infrequently discussed, and appear to resist a foreseeable solution.

This post argues that while LLMs exhibit impressive capabilities in mimicking human language, their reliance on pattern recognition and replication may, among other societally destructive consequences:

stifle genuine creativity and lead to a homogenization of writing styles — and consequently — thinking styles, by inadvertently reinforcing dominant linguistic patterns while neglecting less common or marginalized forms of expression,
eliminate opportunities for serendipitous discovery; and
disrupt intergenerational transfer of wisdom and knowledge.
