When other people used punishment to get what they wanted from you, it didn't work for them, did it?

Depends. Do you count honking at me when I don't realize a light has changed? That certainly "worked". I'd do the same to others, and I expect them to do the same to me.

Many people don't see the intellectual issues to be as clear-cut as traffic lights, especially in complex discussions. If someone honks at you on the road and it isn't obvious that you are making a driving error, it's going to get your back up, right? Same thing in intellectual discussions. Even if it should be obvious to someone that they are making an intellectual error, it's not always the right move to honk at them immediately.
