Here at 80,000 Dollars, we take the idea of Effective Purchases seriously and are constantly searching for ideas for random things people can buy using a framework of importance, tractability and neglectedness.

At this meetup you can pitch your favorite purchases and learn what items other people recommend. Think about what kind of interesting and fun things you've bought that have made your life a little or a lot better, and how you can argue that they are one or more of:

  • Important: Has this made a big impact on your life and happiness per dollar spent?
  • Neglected: Do surprisingly few people purchase this given its value? Can you explain the market inefficiency causing it to be passed by?
  • Tractable: Is this something a large fraction of people could easily buy and get value from right now?

Learn about easy purchases you may be able to improve your life with and share your favorites! For inspiration, I plan on pitching microwave rice cookers, The Objectively Best Rug, tungsten cubes and Mealsquares. See this post for more inspiration.

The meetup will be held Tuesday starting 6pm in the lawn in front of "Pavilion, by Demetri Porphyrios" (Don't trust Apple Maps, but Google Maps works, it's at the intersection of River Terrace and Warren St, near where the ACX meetup was). That way if it rains we can just move under the pavilion.

Lots of people at the 200+ person ACX meetup on Monday expressed interest in coming to the next OBNYC meetup, hence the different location. If you're only an occasional OBNYC attendee, this may be a good meetup to come meet new people!

=== WHEN+WHERE === 6:00pm Tuesday, September 14th Pavilion, by Demetri Porphyrios (River Terrace & Warren St) Under the pavilion if it rains, otherwise on the lawn next to it
