Applications are open for the Spring 2027 cohort of the Beijing AI Safety Residency, hosted at the Beijing AI Safety Hub affiliated with Tsinghua University. There is also an autumn residency that has already begun.
Professor Xu Wei is the hub’s other Co-Director, with Professor Andrew Yao as Chief Scientist.
The Spring 2027 Residency will run for around three months from April 2027.
Targeted at technical AI safety researchers (alignment, evals, oversight, control) with 1–3 publications or similar.
This is a self-directed residency rather than a structured mentorship programme like MATS/Astra. Participants bring their own research agenda.
$5k/month, plus flights, housing, visa support, and devices.
No Mandarin or China background needed.
Applications close November 6, 2026 and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
I think this is exciting news! I believe that this program has enormous potential for improving safety culture in China and for international cooperation.
I also think this is an excellent opportunity for those who face difficulties obtaining visas for research programs focused on safety in the U.S. or the U.K. (e.g. Russians, though I think there are many other applicants who encounter similar challenges).
