I think the solution is clear:
Put a fare gate at the top, or switch the entire MBTA to industry best practice proof-of-payment.

How about something more like a fireman’s poll?
Too much risk of someone landing on someone else's head, or someone who doesn't know how to use a pole breaking their legs
