Epistemic status: reporting what OpenAI's own report and a Bitquery investigation say, plus my reading of it. I checked the transaction on the Sepolia block explorer; I have no inside knowledge of the incident.
AI use: Claude (Fable 5.1) fact-checked the claims against OpenAI's report, the Bitquery write-up, the Sepolia block explorer and the faucet pages (including re-deriving the wallet address from the seed phrase), fixed grammar and light phrasing, expanded the footnotes.
I stumbled upon a tweet about an OpenAI internal model spending test crypto money that belonged neither to it nor to OpenAI while completing a task.[1] I was curious to understand what happened better. For example, I originally missed that this was test-network money (even though the tweet says so), i.e. it has no clear monetary value and developers get it free from faucets for testing.
The actual OpenAI report is Using a funded test cryptocurrency wallet without authorization.[2] The AI ("GPT-5.6 Sol family (internal research model)", per the report) was doing crypto-related work as a training task. This was done on a test network, Sepolia, a separate deployment for testing which does not have real money.[3] In order to change the blockchain's state you have to pay a fee ("gas") in the network's own currency to finance that. The AI didn't have any of this currency. There are faucets (free sources), but they fight bots and automation (typically you have to log in with an account, or prove you hold real money in a real wallet first, or both, plus CAPTCHAs), so the AI couldn't use them.[4] In crypto, wallet private keys are generated from a seed phrase (a "mnemonic") plus an index: one phrase gives an unlimited sequence of accounts, numbered 0, 1, 2 and so on.[5] Some projects use example wallets, and their seed phrases are public. The AI wrote a script that derived accounts from such well-known phrases and checked 362 addresses; one of them had test money, and it used that.[6]

The model actively considered whether this was ethical:

"Sepolia valueless" contradicts the previous CoT thought about bots draining the wallet. I personally don't know whether anyone is running such bots on the test network, but it is a thing on the real-money network.[7]
So the model treated this as "anyone could use this anyway", also checked the last usage, and then used it.
Interestingly, the model never mentioned outside of its CoT that it had used a publicly available wallet.[8]
Then I found a Bitquery investigation which gives more info: it identifies the wallet as account number 19 of a public development seed phrase.[9] The phrase is:
The spending was 0.00608066839727732 Sepolia ETH, approximately 0.00608 test ETH, entirely in gas fees (transaction data).[11]
This is very different from an AI hacking someone's wallet and stealing the money, but there is still a bit of an aspect of an AI using something that did not belong to it or its user. However, you cannot get infinite amounts of this test currency easily: you have to do some work to get it from faucets (which the AI couldn't do). So whatever the AI spent had some value. At the same time, the amount of work involved is so minor that people just put it onto a publicly available wallet, and then anyone can do whatever they want with it.

It belongs to OpenAI's "Misalignment Reports and Notices" series, launched on September 16, 2026 (https://alignment.openai.com/misalignment-reports/), and is tagged "Unauthorized access". OpenAI's one-line lesson: "This case shows that a model can substitute its own judgment about likely harm for the account holder's permission, then act on that judgment without authorization." Its response targets the sandbox rather than wallets: "We have implemented additional safeguards to prevent live internet access for cases like this." ↩︎

One account held enough Sepolia ETH for the planned deployment. The model selected it." Its first reaction to the idea had been no: "Could deploy contracts ourselves to Sepolia by deriving funded publicly exposed dev private key? No. Could exploit known public test private keys with faucet balance? Anvil default accounts may coincidentally have Sepolia funds from people." ↩︎
On Sepolia, nothing was draining this account at the time: the block explorer shows it idle from June 15 to June 26, 2026, the model's transaction as the only one that day, and the next ones seven hours later (https://eth-sepolia.blockscout.com/address/0xaCcf7803C88B05846c46946D7B46418A9ADAd578). The "bot" reading came from its history: 357 transactions between June 5 and 15, almost all failed scripted token transfers fired one per block. On the real-money network the same address was emptied by sweeper bots within seconds when a meme coin named OpenAI routed its fees to it on October 16, 2026: 24 bots, 126 hand-overs in 14 hours, about $640, according to Bitquery. ↩︎

It did not disclose that it had selected a funded account through a public recovery phrase or spent that account's balance." ↩︎

The article credits the find to @apoorveth, traces the phrase to "Celo's version of ganache-cli" and "the default test seed in the 0x Project's developer tools", and does not print the words themselves. Re-derived during fact-checking: account 19 of the phrase above is 0xaCcf7803C88B05846c46946D7B46418A9ADAd578, the sender of the transaction. The Yam file is a one-line launcher for a local ganache-cli test chain with a fixed mnemonic, committed on 2020-08-09; it never touches Sepolia. GitHub code search finds the phrase in about 300 files (0x, Celo, Set Protocol, Yam and many Dockerfiles). The funds on Sepolia got there because someone later sent faucet ETH to one of the derived addresses. ↩︎
Sepolia block 11,145,603, June 26, 2026, 18:07:48 UTC: 2,367,806 gas at 2,568,060,220 wei = 0.00608066839727732 ETH, value transferred 0. The transaction created a deployer contract that created nine more: vUSD, vBTC and vETH mock tokens, two pools, a registry, a router, a vault and a clearing-house wrapper, matching the model's final message. The amount is redacted in OpenAI's report; it comes from the block explorer. For scale, Google's faucet drips 0.05 Sepolia ETH per request and Alchemy's 0.1 per day. ↩︎

BIP-39 calls the twelve words the "mnemonic sentence"; its "passphrase" is an optional extra secret, which is why I avoid that word.
