Just an absolutely amazing post. You know when you've had a feeling for years you just couldn't quite articulate in a succinct and accurate way, and then someone else comes along and does it -- and you're like "YES! YES!! THAT EXACTLY!" That's what happened here for me.

I have a very illiquid role. I'm 26. I've been at an early stage startup since graduating from college. I have gotten vast experience across functions. I'm now Chief of Staff. So, very much a generalist. And I constantly worry about where I'll be in 5 years. My boss, thankfully, sees my value due to our countless joint projects, conversations, etc... but it's definitely not obvious to the market, and there's only one of my boss. He pays me well, but I don't know how I would match this salary elsewhere should this company go away.

So, I'm trying to be proactive... getting to think about how to articulate what I can bring to the table... trying to craft my role so I can gain more liquid skills... and probably will seek a liquid role/brand name job next, just to solidify the ol resume. That or a brand name MBA.

Thanks for writing this!
